I almost have compassion for Rey Colón. He picked a fight, as aldermen do; it was, very profoundly, the wrong fight. A political rival campaigned against him at the Logan Square Farmers Market, which is a plot of deeply sacred space in his ward. Shortly after winning re-election, he tried to get the farmers market shut down, because he is an actual demon, I guess. This backfired, and the entire neighborhood failed to forget this four years ago, when he was extremely defeated. He still somehow has a Wikipedia page.
You can successfully attack pretty much anything in Logan Square. Quintuple housing prices. Build massive skyscrapers next to the blue line. Push out tens of thousands of multigenerational residents. Approve permits to bulldoze every worker’s cottage built before 1920, which is most of them.
But not fuck with the Logan Square Farmer’s Market.
Allow me to me lean in and say that more sternly than before.
