The intention, the pause
Given what’s coming, there are updated rules.
Buy nothing on subscription.
Buy nothing that inherently possesses a “subscription” to spare parts, refills, etc.
Buy only what will last as long as possible.
No shoppy shop items. How old are you?
Replace for durability.
Nothing extraneous.
Nothing extravagant.
Wait for the sale.
Follow the six week rule: when you find something you want, add it to a note with today’s date. Only buy stuff that has a date earlier than six weeks ago. Trim the list ruthlessly.
As little technology as possible.
Never buy the latest version just because it’s new.
Out: minimalism. In: practicality.
Favor quality materials. Nothing delicate.
Hit eBay, the electronic bay. It’s still good.
Abandon brands wholesale that succumb, incorrectly, to physical platform collapse by removing material, falling back to lower-quality materials, shifting construction to save money, etc.
Travel cheap. Only travel when you have to.
Eat only at home.
Quit booze.
